Artwork for the original colour lithograph was created by Gordon Arthur Andrews.  The poster was published for the Commonwealth Railways and printed by Victory Publicity Pty. Ltd. between 1940 and 1959

The Trans-Australian Railway crosses the vast expanse of Nullarbor Plain, from Port Augusta in South Australia to Kalgoorlie in Western Australia, a distance of 1711 km (1063 miles). Work started in September 1912 from each end and the rail work converged on 17 October 1917. The railway track was built to a standard gauge, despite the fact at the time the Western Australian and South Australian state railway systems were narrow gauge. Work on the Sydney and Perth Standard Gauge was completed in 1970 and the iconic Indian Pacific train was unveiled.
