The Basilica of the Assumption of St. Mary
The Artwork for the original colour lithograph was created by Franz Lenhard and issued by the Italian Tourist office ENIT (Ente Nazionale Industrie Turistiche during the 1950's. This magnificent illustration promotes travel to Aquileia located in Friuli Venezia Giulia, in the province of Udine.

Franz Lenhart was born in Austria in 1898 and studied art in Vienna and Florence, to where he moved in 1921. He was very prolific during the late 1920's and 30's as a graphic artist creating artworks for prints and posters as well as travel brochures and labels for clients in the Alps of North Italy, particularly in and around Merano, Bolzano and Cortina d’Ampezzo.

Aquileia, with its extensive archaeological area and the Basilica of the Assumption of St. Mary, (Basilica Patriarcale di Santa Maria Assunta) is a precious treasure chest of art and history and was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1998. The original church dates back to the fourth century. The current basilica was built in the eleventh century and rebuilt again in the thirteenth century. It is located on Via Sacra, overlooking the Piazza del Capitolo, along with the bell tower and baptistery.

Aquileia was one of the largest and richest cities of the Roman Empire in the Mediterranean, the seat of a Patriarchate, which lasted until 1751, and the driving force of Christianity throughout central Europe during the Middle Ages.
